Following the Russian Peredwischniki-school tradition, I tried to capture European cities’ daily life including all socio-critical, political, and social components. For 19 th century Russian realist artists, it was of great importance to concern themselves with society critically. They did so, by highlighting the austere and laborious life of the common folk.

The idyllic scenery is rendered ambivalent through the phrase “Did he ask you?”. The question itself could imply subliminal dissatisfaction in a situation that threatens to topple over or the timid hope of a happy match.Original size: 70x100, oil on canvas
